California Space InstituteEstablished in 1980, CalSpace is a University of California multi-campus research unit, located at UC Santa Barbara, dedicated to promote research and education through the CalSpace Centers of Excellence located at UC San Diego, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Davis. Each Center focuses on different aspects of aerospace science, public outreach, and act as liaisons between the UC system and other organizations. As a result, CalSpace established the James R. Arnold Lectureship and a weekly seminar series, both broadcasted through their Webcast Center on the UC Santa Barbara campus. CalSpace also manages a plethora of student related activities including fellowships and a distance learning program.
California Space Grant Consortium
The California Space Grant Consortium (CaSGC), part of NASA's
National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program, sponsors fellowships which have helped CalSpace researchers initiate their studies
using remote sensing. Fellows and their funded projects include:
- Solomon Dobrowski - Evaluating BRDF modeling strategies for biophysical parameter retrieval through inversion, coupled canopy models,
and vegetation indices in discontinuous grapevine canopies.
- James Goodman - Hyperspectral remote sensing of coral reefs in the Hawaiian Islands.
- Jonathan Greenberg - Ecological and economic influences on small-scale tropical rainforest succession: a remote sensing approach.
- Melinda Mulitsch - Integrating empirical and modeling approaches to evaluate impacts of land use/cover changes on riparian ecosystems in
California. She is currently studying wetlands with remote sensing.
- Anne Orlando - Using remote sensing and GPS technologies to study and conserve the last elephants of the Sahel.
- Pablo Zarco-Tejada - Estimation of leaf and crop biophysical variables through radiative transfer modeling and hyperspectral remote sensing for
integration with precision agriculture.
CalView is an affilate member of the AmericaView consortium. AmericaView (AV) is a nationwide program that focuses on satellite remote sensing data and technologies in support of applied research, K-16 education, workforce development, and technology transfer. As a member, CalView coordinates with state and federal agencies to facilitate easy and unencumbered access to remotely sensed data, like aerial imagery, and satellite data products. CalSpace researchers use California's Spatial Information Library, CaSIL to distribute their data. In addition the CalView site provides mapping tools and tutorials to help users understand and analyze maps and images. First-timers to geospatial professionals will find valuable resources and tools with which to analyze and explore remote sensing imagery.
